ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- Phillip Archer collected 10 birdies Thursday en route to a nine-under-par 63 and a three-stroke lead after the first round of the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship.
Nick Dougherty, Retief Goosen and Henrik Stenson all shot bogey-free rounds of 66 Thursday but found themselves well back of Archer. Three more players are tied at 67 with another 10 golfers at four-under 68.
Dougherty played in a threesome with Archer and said he was surprised to find himself so far back after playing so solidly himself.
"I didn't expect to be three shots behind one of my playing partners after that," Dougherty said. "He's a great guy with a really solid game and you wonder where he's been up until now. You watch him play and it's top-drawer stuff. He's as good as any of the other guys."
Archer didn't make the cut in last week's European tour tournament but twice Thursday ran off three consecutive birdies. He also had one bogey. His 63 was one shot off the 18-hole tournament record set by Stenson last year.
