Surgery likely in Matt Hasselbeck's future

SEATTLE, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- Seattle Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck may need to undergo major shoulder surgery to help repair a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder.

Hasselbeck, who suffered through a series of injuries during the 2006-07 NFL season, is waiting to see whether MRI tests indicate surgery is necessary, the Seattle Times reported.

Hasselbeck, whose season ended Sunday in a 27-24 divisional playoff loss to the Chicago Bears, endured several broken fingers on his left hand and a knee injury during the season.

Hasselbeck also never found his rhythm this season with two new receivers, Deion Branch and Nate Burleson, and played behind a shaky offensive line, the newspaper said.

If Tuesday's MRI indicates Hasselbeck needs the surgery, it would keep him out possibly through June's minicamps and could disrupt his timing with his returning receiving core, the newspaper said.
