New tourney for N. American soccer crown

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- Major League Soccer and the Mexican Soccer Federation's First Division have agreed to compete in a tournament to determine the top team in North America.

The eight-team SuperLiga tournament, announced Sunday, will feature four teams from each organization. The format calls for group and knockout phases, much like those used to determine the champion in the Union of European Football Associations Champions League.

All games will be played at U.S. venues between July 24 and August 29. The winning club will collect $1 million.

"We are proud to announce the creation of SuperLiga, which will quickly become one of the most prestigious international club soccer tournaments held in the United States," said MLS Commissioner Don Garber.

Participants in future editions of the tournament will be selected based on competitive criteria, league officials said, but teams for the inaugural SuperLiga were chosen on an invitation-only basis.

The MSL teams are D.C. United, FC Dallas, the Los Angeles Galaxy and the Houston Dynamo. The MSF First Division will be represented by Club America, CF Pachuca, Monarcas Morelia and CD Guadalajara.
