Canete grabs first European Tour win

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- Ariel Canete won for the first time on the European Tour Sunday with a two-shot victory at the Joburg Open in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Canete earned full playing privileges in Europe by firing a 4-under 67 Sunday for a four-round total of 19-under 266.

The third round had to be completed early Sunday after a thunderstorm forced suspension of play Saturday. Canete owned the lead when the third round was completed and protected it the rest of the day.

Andrew McLardy finished alone in second place at 268 after shooting a 68 in the closing round.

While spending the Christmas holiday in Argentina, Canete made a late decision to take advantage of an opportunity to play in the Joburg Open.

"I thought to myself, 'let's go to South Africa and give it a try, you never know,'" he said. "Now I am very, very happy."

Hennie Otto shot a final-round 67 to finish third at 269.
