Sources: Bonds failed drug test last year

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- San Francisco Giants outfielder Barry Bonds is once again the center of controversy after sources claim he tested positive for amphetamines last summer.

The anonymous sources, who claim to have knowledge of the test results, say that Bonds failed a drug test after taking drugs from teammate Mark Sweeney's locker. Bonds, implicated in a steroid scandal two seasons ago, released a statement Thursday that apologized to Sweeney but did not address the drug test, USA Today reported Friday.

Bonds learned of the test results in August.

Sweeney denied ever possessing or using illegal substances.

According to Major League Baseball rules, players are not publicly identified the first time they test positive for amphetamines. Giants officials and Bonds' agent Jeff Borris declined to comment on if this accusation would affect Bonds' contract for the 2007 season, USA Today reported.
