KANSAS CITY, Mo., Jan. 12 (UPI) -- Eight-time Pro Bowl selection Tony Gonzalez has agreed in principle to a five-year contract extension with the Kansas City Chiefs, the NFL team said.
Gonzalez, a 30-year-old tight end, is entering his 11th NFL season. He owns franchise record with 721 receptions for 8,710 yards and 61 touchdowns. He trails only Shannon Sharpe for the NFL records for tight ends in those categories.
Last season, Gonzales played in 15 games for Kansas City, catching 73 passes for 900 yards and five touchdowns. He also earned his eighth-consecutive trip to the Pro Bowl.
"Simplistically, we're very pleased to get this done," said Chiefs President Carl Peterson. "It will, in all essence, allow Tony Gonzalez to finish his career with the Kansas City Chiefs."
Gonzalez has played his entire pro career with the Chiefs, who made him the 13th overall pick in the 1997 draft. He played his college ball for the University of California.
