Soccer's Beckham signs with LA Galaxy

MADRID, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- English soccer star David Beckham, once captain of England's national team, has left Real Madrid to join the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer.

Beckham, 31, will complete the season with Real Madrid on June 30 before traveling to the United States to join the Galaxy. The Telegraph said Beckham signed a five-year contract with the 12-year-old MLS team worth a reported $250 million.

"This week Real Madrid asked me to make a decision regarding my future and the offer to extend my contract by a further two seasons," Beckham said in a statement. "I have decided to join the Los Angeles Galaxy and play in the MSL from August this year."

Beckham played for the Manchester United football team before joining Real Madrid in 2003.
