Clijsters, Jankovic move to Sydney finals

SYDNEY, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- Kim Clijsters and Jelena Jankovic earned finals berths Thursday in the $600,000 Medibank International tennis tournament in Sydney.

Jankovic knocked out her third seeded player of the week in the semifinals with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory over eighth-seeded Nicole Vaidisova. She ousted fifth-seeded Martina Hingis and top-seeded Amelie Mauresmo in earlier rounds.

Clijsters, seeded third in the tournament and ranked fifth in the world, claimed a see-saw semifinal from Li Na, with the players traded one-loss sets before Clijsters took the final set 7-5.

Jankovic will be going against history as she seeks her fourth upset of the week. She's never beaten Clijsters in five previous meetings.

Heat was a problem at the tournament, with play stopped often during both three-set semifinals as temperatures in the 90s F were accompanied by high humidity.
