Breeders' Cup expands to 2 days

LEXINGTON, Ky., Jan. 8 (UPI) -- The Breeders' Cup World Championships, in the biggest change in its 24-year history, is expanding horse racing to two days adding three $1 million races.

There will be 11 Thoroughbred races in 2007 Breeders' Cup competition Oct 26-27 at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J., Breeders' Cup Ltd. said in an announcement Monday.

The new $1 million races approved by the board of directors Friday are the 1 mile, 70-yard Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile for 3-year-olds and up; the 6 furlong Filly & Mare Sprint for 3-year-olds and up; and the Juvenile Turf, a 1 mile turf race for 2-year-old colts, gelding and fillies.

Three other stakes races on the card for 2- and 3-year-old fillies and 2-year-olds funded by Breeders' Cup will have purses of $250,000.

"There will be more races, more purse money and more nominator participation than at any time in the event's history, all designed to attract the best horses from around the world ...," said Bill Farish, Breeders' Cup Board chairman.

Breeders' Cup purses increased from $14 million to $20 million in 2006. Total purses jump to $23 million in 2007.
