Singh wins PGA Tour season opener

KAPALUA, Hawaii, Jan. 7 (UPI) -- Vijay Singh built a seven-shot lead Sunday and wound up beating Adam Scott by two to win the season-opening Mercedes-Benz Championship in Hawaii.

Singh, 43, has won 30 times on the PGA Tour -- a record 18 of them coming after his 40th birthday. He had shared the post-40 record with Sam Snead.

After leading Scott by three to start the final round, Singh built a seven-shot cushion through four holes. Scott cut the deficit to two with two holes to play, but three-putted the 17th green for bogey.

He birdied the par-5 18th to account for the final margin.

Singh not only won $1 million but also took the lead in the inaugural FedEx Cup points race, a year-long competition to determine an official PGA Tour champion. He shot a 3-under 70 Sunday for a four-day total of 14-under 278 at the Kapalua Plantation Course.

Scott fired a 280 after shooting 69 Sunday.

Trevor Immelman finished alone in third at 283 while Davis Love III, J.B. Holmes and Will MacKenzie shared fourth at 284.
