Singh takes lead into final round

KAPALUA, Hawaii, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- Vijay Singh built a three-shot lead Saturday after three rounds of the year's first PGA Tour event -- the Mercedes-Benz Championship at Kapalua, Hawaii.

Singh shot a 3-under 70 over the Kapalua Plantation Course for a three-day total of 208 as he attempts to win for the 18th time since he turned 40. He is tied with the late Sam Snead for the all-time PGA Tour record for most wins past age 40.

Adam Scott -- one of only four players to break 70 on another windy day on the island of Maui -- posted a 69 and shared second place with Trevor Immelman at 211. Another shot back were Will MacKenzie and J.B. Holmes.

MacKenzie recorded an even-par 73 despite hitting a tee shot out of bounds.

Only 16 players in the elite field of 34 were under par going into the fourth round. Among them was three-time defending champion Stuart Appleby, who was at 217.
