There are three finalists in each of the 15 categories. The categories include: sprinters, 2-year-old male and female, breeder, trainer, jockey and older male and female horses.

The awards are named after a great 18th century racehorse named Eclipse. He was undefeated in 18 races and was also bred and produced prize winning offspring.

The NTRA protects the interests of thoroughbred racetracks, horse owners, breeders, trainers and affiliated horse racing associations. Their offices are in Lexington, Ky., and New York City.
