ALLEN PARK, Mich., Jan. 3 (UPI) -- Joe Barry, most recently linebackers coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has been hired as defensive coordinator by the Detroit Lions.

Barry joins the staff of Coach Rod Marinelli, who is also his father-in-law. They worked together at Tampa Bay, where Marinelli was the defensive line coach and assistant head coach before going to the Lions last January.

Barry was with the Buccaneers for six seasons. During that time, the Tampa Bay defense was ranked in the top five four times and was the No. 1 ranked defense in 2002 and 2005.

He replaces Donnie Henderson, who was let go Tuesday by Detroit. Marinelli and Henderson reportedly agreed to a mutual parting because of differing philosophies on defense.
