Barber takes NFC player weekly honor

NEW YORK, Jan. 3 (UPI) -- Tiki Barber, who set a New York Giants rushing record in the NFL's final regular season weekend, was selected an NFC player of the week.

Barber claimed the conference's offensive player of the week honor while San Francisco cornerback Walt Harris took the year's final defensive award and honor and Detroit kicker Jason Hanson was the special teams player of the week.

Barber, who announced his retirement earlier this season, set a franchise record by rushing for 234 yards and three touchdowns as the Giants sewed up a playoff spot with a 34-28 victory over the Washington Redskins last weekend. He finished with 1,662 yards on the year.

Harris, an 11-year NFL veteran, collected his first NFC defensive player of the week honor with an interception, fumble recovery and four tackles. He returned the interception for a touchdown as the 49ers knocked Denver from playoff contention with a 26-23 overtime victory.

Hanson claimed his ninth career player of the week award after he made four field goals in the Lions' 39-31 win over Dallas.
