Top-seeded Jankovic wins opener

AUCKLAND, New Zealand, Jan. 2 (UPI) -- Jelena Jankovic posted a straight-set victory Tuesday in her first-round match of the ASB Open tennis tournament in Auckland, New Zealand.

Jankovic, from Serbia and seeded first in Auckland, was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over German Julia Schruff. She moves into the second round Wednesday against Finn Emma Laine, who was a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 winner over France's Mathilde Johansson.

In a second-round match Tuesday, American Jill Craybas beat Argentine Gisela Dulko, 6-3, 7-5.

No. 6 seeded German Martina Muller was upset by Argentine Paola Suarez, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1; while third-seeded Slovak Daniela Hantuchova beat fellow countrywoman Dominika Cibulkova 6-1, 3-6, 6-2; and No. 5 Russian Vera Zvonareva topped American Lilia Osterloh, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3. in first-round matches.

Other first-round winners Tuesday were New Zealander Marina Erakovic, Austrian Yvonne Meusburger, American Laura Granville and France's Virginie Razzano.

The tournament wraps with a title match Sunday, when the champion will receive a check for $21,140.
