FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga., Jan. 1 (UPI) -- The Atlanta Falcons announced Monday that head Coach Jim Mora has been released from the remaining two years of his contract after a 7-9 season.
Mora, 45, was named the 12th head coach in Falcons history on Jan. 9, 2004. He compiled a 26-22 regular season record during his three seasons as head coach.
The Falcons were 11-5 in Mora's first season and 8-8 last year. This season the Falcons started out 5-2 but lost seven of their last nine games.
"This was an extremely difficult decision for us," said Falcons owner Arthur Blank. "We had the highest hopes and aspirations for a long run with Jim as our coach, but we feel this decision is in the best long-term interests of our franchise.
"I have great respect for Jim's passion for the game," said Blank. "We wish Jim and his family all of the best."
