Denver quarterback suffers head injury

DENVER, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler left the game against San Francisco in the second quarter with a head injury Sunday after getting sacked by Anthony Adams.

Cutler returned for the second half but the Broncos lost 26-23 in overtime, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2002.

As Cutler dropped back to pass, Adams hit him and then came down on top of the rookie quarterback.

Jake Plummer, who hadn't played in five weeks, replaced Cutler for the rest of the half.

Clippers say they are not seeking Artest

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Los Angeles Clippers General Manager Elgin Baylor says the team is no longer trying to deal for Sacramento Kings star Ron Artest.

"As far as anything goes with Ron Artest, that's a dead issue," Baylor told the Los Angeles Times. "We're no longer talking to Sacramento about Artest, that's not going to happen."

The Kings reportedly contacted the Clippers last Friday to ask if LA was interested in trading for Artest, the NBA's 2003-04 defensive player of the year. There was speculation the Clippers might send Corey Maggette to Sacramento for Artest.

Apparently, the Kings did not follow up with a formal trade proposal as expected.

Baylor declined comment on the discussions with Sacramento.

"We're always looking to improve the team," Baylor said. "We talk to teams regularly about players we're interested in, players that we think can help us, and we'll also listen if someone comes to us with something that we think makes sense for us."

Woods reveals wife's pregnancy on his birthday

ORLANDO, Fla., Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Golf star Tiger Woods revealed on his 31st birthday that his wife, Elin Nordegren, is pregnant with their first child.

People magazine said that while celebrating his birthday Saturday, the famed golfer posted the announcement of his impending fatherhood and good fortune on his Web site.

"As some of you know, today is my 31st birthday. I'll spend it quietly with family and friends, but Elin and I have more exciting news to share: We are expecting our first child together this summer," he announced on the Internet.

Woods, who plans on starting his 2007 PGA Tour season with January's Buick Invitational, confessed that the news could only have been better if his father had not succumbed to cancer in May.

"Obviously, we couldn't be happier and our families are thrilled," he added. "I have always wanted to be a dad. I just wish my father could be around to share the experience."

Thoroughbred trainer Delp dead at 74

ELLICOTT CITY, Md., Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Bud Delp, the Thoroughbred trainer behind former Kentucky Derby winner Spectacular Bid, has died at his Maryland home at the age of 74.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Delp, who helped Spectacular Bid win both the derby and the Preakness Stakes in 1979, died Friday in Ellicott City, Md., after a long battle with cancer.

For his training efforts, Delp was elected to the horse racing world's hall of fame in 2002. Racing experts have tabbed Spectacular Bid as one of the greatest race horses ever.

While training Spectacular Bid, Delp helped the horse win 26 of its 30 total starts, only finishing below third place once.

During his lengthy career, Delp trained 3,674 winners and helped horses garner training titles in New Jersey, Maryland and Delaware.
