NHL: San Jose 4, Dallas 2

DALLAS, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Joe Thornton had a goal and two assists Sunday and the San Jose Sharks rebounded from their worst loss in 11 years with a 4-2 win over the Dallas Stars.

Jonathan Cheechoo and Patrick Marleau each had a goal and an assist for the Sharks, who lost an 8-0 decision to Phoenix Saturday night.

Joe Pavelski also scored for San Jose. Vesa Toskala stopped 21-of-23 Dallas shots.

Sergei Zubov and Niklas Hagman scored for Dallas. The Stars had won four of their previous five games despite missing captain Brenden Morrow and veteran centers Mike Modano and Eric Lindros.

Dallas goaltender Marty Turco surrendered three goals on 10 shots in the first period before he was replaced by Mike Smith. Smith made 18 saves the rest of the way.
