NHL: Phoenix 8, San Jose 0

PHOENIX, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Curtis Joseph made 40 saves for his first shutout of the season and Jeremy Roenick had the hat trick Saturday night as the Phoenix Coyotes beat San Jose, 8-0.

It was Joseph's 48th career shutout, and Roenick's 10th hat trick. Shane Doan had a goal and four assists for the Coyotes, who won their second straight game and their third out of four.

Evgeni Nabokov gave up three goals on six shots before the Sharks pulled him for Vesa Toskala late in the first. Toskala gave up five goals on 20 shots, as San Jose lost its third straight and its fourth out of five.

The Sharks out-shot the Coyotes, 19-6, in the first -- and still wound up on the short end of a 3-0 score.

Phoenix was 2-for-6 on the power play. The Sharks came up empty on four extra-man chances.

San Jose coach Ron Wilson was ejected during the second for directing abusive language at an official.
