NHL: New Jersey 2, N.Y. Islanders 0

UNIONDALE, N.Y., Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Martin Brodeur made 29 saves and Brian Rafalski and Patrik Elias scored goals Saturday night as the New Jersey Devils beat the New York Islanders, 2-0.

Brodeur posted his sixth shutout of the season, and the 86th of his career, as the Devils won their third straight game.

Rick DiPietro made 34 stops for the Islanders, who lost their second straight.

The Devils opened the scoring at 5:21 of the first when Rafalski's shot went into the net past DiPietro, who was screened out on the play.

The Devils defense was dominant in the third, as the Islanders managed just three shots on goal in the first 10 minutes of the period.

The Islanders pulled DiPietro in the final minute, and Elias scored with 10.6 seconds left on the clock.

New Jersey was 1-for-4 on the power play. The Islanders came up empty in three power-play opportunities.
