DENVER, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler left Sunday's game against San Francisco in the second quarter with a head injury after getting sacked by Anthony Adams.

Cutler returned for the second half but the Broncos lost, 26-23, in overtime -- missing the playoffs for the first time since 2002.

As Cutler dropped back to pass, Adams hit him and then came down on top of the rookie quarterback.

Jake Plummer, who hadn't played in five weeks, replaced Cutler for the rest of the half.
