MILWAUKEE, Dec. 29 (UPI) -- Free-agent pitcher Jeff Suppan has signed a four-year contract with the Milwaukee Brewers worth more than $10 million a season.
Suppan passed a physical examination Friday, the final hurdle before the agreement was made final, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. The newspaper said the contract is worth a total of $42 million.
Suppan, who turns 32 next week, was the most valuable player of the 2006 National League Championship Series while a member of the St. Louis Cardinals. The right-handed pitcher was 12-7 with a 4.12 earned run average during the regular season.
"With 44 wins in the last three seasons, Jeff is not only a proven winner, he is also one of the most durable pitchers in baseball," said Milwaukee General Manager Doug Melvin. "This agreement makes us feel very good about the depth of our rotation. Jeff's experience and durability should have a positive influence on our entire pitching staff."
The Brewers will be Suppan's sixth major league team. He owns a career record of 106-101 with a 4.60 ERA over 317 games.
