NHL: Detroit 3, Minnesota 1

DETROIT, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- Kirk Maltby scored before the game was a minute old Wednesday night and the Detroit Red Wings went on to beat Minnesota, 3-1.

Henrik Zetterberg and Johan Franzen scored goals in the second period for Detroit. Franzen also had an assist, and Dominik Hasek made 31 saves on 32 shots for the Red Wings, who have won three of their last four games.

Pavol Demitra scored at 17:14 of the third for Minnesota to prevent a shutout, and Nicklas Backstrom was beaten three times on 33 shots for the Wild, who have dropped three of their last four games.

Minnesota has lost 10 games in a row on the road.

On the power play, Minnesota was 0-for-3, and Detroit went 0-for-6.
