MEMPHIS, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- The NBA's Memphis Grizzlies Thursday fired Coach Mike Fratello, after the team stumbled to a 6-24 record to start the 2006-07 season.
In his first full season with the franchise in the 2005-06 campaign, Fratello -- who is the winningest coach in franchise history -- recorded a 49-33 record and secured a first-round match-up against eventual Western Conference champion Dallas.
He succeeded the fired Hubie Brown Dec. 2, 2004, and the Grizzlies finished the 2004-03 season with a 40-26 mark under Fratello. When he arrived, Memphis was just 5-11.
"I wish to thank Mike for the contributions he made to the Grizzlies organization," said President of Basketball Operations Jerry West. "He is a good coach and friend."
Fratello -- who has also coached Cleveland and Atlanta -- is 17th in both all-time wins (667) and in games coached (1,213) among NBA coaches. He has coached 11 playoff teams in 16 seasons.
Memphis has played much of this season without star forward Pao Gasol, who was recovering from a broken foot.
