ANAHEIM, Calif., Dec. 26 (UPI) -- Los Angeles Angels outfielder Juan Rivera has been scheduled for surgery to repair his broken left leg.

Angels officials said Rivera, 28, injured his leg Friday while playing for the Oriente Caribbeans in Venezuela. The injury was diagnosed as a broken left tibia and the leg was placed in a cast before Rivera returned to the United States.

The surgery is to take place in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., the team said.

Rivera is coming off a 2006 season in which he posted career bests in batting average (.310), runs (65), hits (139), home runs (23) and runs batted in (85).
