LAUSANNE, Switzerland, Dec. 22 (UPI) -- Officials from both Koreas have had productive discussions toward fielding a unified team in upcoming Games, the International Olympic Committee said.
The IOC, in a release Friday, cited "significant progress" in the process to join athletes from the two countries into one team. The Koreas competed in the 2004 Games in Greece as one team.
"It is encouraging to see sport and the Olympic ideals serving to facilitate the creation of a unified team," the IOC release stated, "and the IOC will continue to support the two (national Olympic committees) in their ongoing efforts and commitment to achieve this historic goal."
The IOC said the Korean officials next need to submit an analysis of the qualification process for participants in a unified Korean team and a written agreement endorsing that process along with a letter of support from the governments in North and South Korea.
Korean Olympics officials have said they plan to send a unified team to the 2008 Games in Beijing.
