FOXBORO, Mass., Dec. 22 (UPI) -- Former Pro Bowl punter Todd Sauerbrun, suspended earlier this season for a banned-substance violation, has signed with the New England Patriots.

Sauerbrun was voted to the Pro Bowl three times while kicking for the Carolina Panthers. He's also played with Chicago, Kansas City and Denver.

He was with the Denver Broncos earlier this season when he tested positive for the supplement ephedra and was suspended for four games. The Broncos released him once the suspension was up.

New England has had problems with injuries to punters this season. Josh Miller was placed on injured reserve in November with a shoulder injury and Ken Walker, signed to replace Miller, was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury.

Sauerbrun has appeared in 162 NFL games, averaging 44 yards a punt.
