NBC hopes hockey stars will make fans

NEW YORK, Dec. 22 (UPI) -- NBC hopes a hockey "Game of the Week" and an emphasis on rising stars tipped to be the next Wayne Gretzkys and Bobby Orrs can attract U.S. viewers

The game lost fans during the 2004-05 lockout. Last season, Nielsen ratings on NBC were from ABC's numbers in 2003-04.

Network programming executives say they think singling out one game will lure a national audience, not just the fans of individual teams, the Hollywood Reporter said. But they still plan to televise three games to get team fans involved.

On Jan. 13, the Pittsburgh Penguins-Philadelphia Flyers matchup will be available in 60 percent of the United States. Sidney Crosby of the Penguins and other emerging players are being featured in commercials for the hockey broadcasts.

"We're still doing three games because you have to regionalize hockey, but there is a focus game, and we want to take advantage of this new NHL," said Sam Flood, the coordinating producer, said.
