BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Dec. 17 (UPI) -- Neil Callaway has been named the new football coach at Alabama-Birmingham.
For the last five seasons, he was the offensive coordinator/offensive line coach at the University of Georgia.
The Alabama graduate and Macon, Ga., native has never been a head coach before.
"Coach Callaway brings to UAB a hard-nosed attitude, both on the field and in the classroom," UAB interim Athletic Director Richard Margison said. "He knows how to win. He has been connected with winning programs everywhere he has been."
Callaway reportedly beat out a number of other candidates who were considered too expensive.
Among them were LSU offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher, South Carolina defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix and Mississippi State offensive coordinator Woody McCorvey.
The career assistant also has worked at Houston, Auburn and Wyoming.
He succeeds Watson Brown, who resigned after 12 seasons to become head coach at Tennessee Tech.
