NHL: Carolina 3, Tampa Bay 2

TAMPA, Fla., Dec. 17 (UPI) -- Ray Whitney scored the game-winning goal Saturday night as the Carolina Hurricanes beat Tampa Bay, 3-2.

The goal came at 18:36 of the third period and gave Carolina a 3-1 lead, which was shortened by a power-play goal by Martin St. Louis with 56 seconds left in the contest.

Eric Staal scored his 17th goal of the season, and Cam Ward gave up two goals on 32 shots for the Hurricanes, who broke a five-game losing streak.

Ryan Craig scored and Marc Denis was beaten three times on 27 shots for the Lightning, who have dropped four straight and eight of their last nine games.

On the power play, Carolina was 1-for-4, and Tampa Bay was 1-for-6.
