Tom O'Brien takes N.C. State job

RALEIGH, N.C., Dec. 8 (UPI) -- Tom O'Brien Friday was named the new football coach at North Carolina State University.

He succeeds Chuck Amato, who was fired Nov. 26 after a 3-9 season in his seventh year at the ACC school.

The 58-year-old O'Brien coached for 10 years at Boston College, where his teams never had a losing record. He leaves the ACC school with a 10-year record of 75-45, and more wins than any other coach in BC history.

"When you think of integrity, you think of Tom O'Brien," said N.C. State Athletic Director Lee Fowler. "He is one of an elite group of coaches who have enjoyed high levels of success on the field and in the classroom. I have every confidence that he will lead N.C. State to national prominence in both of those areas."

This season, O'Brien guided the Eagles to a 9-3 record.

O'Brien will not be on the sidelines when Boston College plays Navy in the Meineke Car Care Bowl at Charlotte, N.C., Dec. 30.
