MORGANTOWN, W.Va., Dec. 8 (UPI) -- West Virginia football coach Rich Rodriguez told his players Friday he is returning to the Big East school and will not leave for the Alabama job.
He made the announcement at a team meeting.
Rodriguez was pondering a reported $2 million a year offer from officials at Alabama earlier this week.
Various reports said Alabama wanted to fill its vacant post with Rodriguez on Friday.
"I'm very excited to stay at West Virginia and look forward to coaching here the rest of my career," Rodriguez told the Charleston Gazette. "A lot of things that influenced my decision was the outpouring of support from the fans in West Virginia and throughout the country. It had a tremendous influence on me and my family."
Rodriguez was the leading candidate to replace Mike Shula, who was fired Nov. 27 after a four-year record of 26-23 at his alma mater.
