CHICAGO, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- Baseball Hall of Famer and long-time Chicago Cubs second baseman Ryne Sandberg has been signed to manage the team's Single-A minor league affiliate.

Sandberg, 47, will take over the Peoria Chiefs next season, the Cubs announced Tuesday. It will be Sandberg's first managerial position.

Sandberg was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005 after a 15-year career in which he hit .285 with 282 home runs and 1,061 runs batted in over 2,164 -- nearly all with Chicago. He is one of four Cubs players to have his uniform number, 23, retired.
