WHANGAPARAOA, New Zealand, Nov. 30 (UPI) -- Australia's Scott Strange Thursday shot 1-under-par 67 to grab the lead after one round of the European Tour's New Zealand Open at Whangaparaoa.

Strange has a one-shot lead over a trio of players from Australia -- Jarrod Moseley, Greg Chalmers and Kim Felton.

Those three all shot 3-under 68 on a hot day, which also included strong winds and heavy rain rain before the day ended at the Golf Harbor Country Club.

Chalmers and Felton both bogeyed the final hole.

"We got a bit lucky (with the weather) I think," admitted Strange, who won the Philippines Open on the Asian Tour earlier this year. "I had a birdie chance on 17 and had one on 18 and I knocked them in. When I had a realistic birdie chance, I holed the putt."

Tournament favorite Michael Campbell of Australia is tied for ninth place at even-par 71.
