Spanish cyclist Galvez dies after crash

GHENT, Belgium, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- Spanish world champion cyclist Isaac Galvez died Sunday after he crashed into a railing during an indoor race in Belgium, race organizers said.

The 31-year-old collided with Belgian rider Dimitri de Fauw and then crashed into the railing, the BBC reported. He suffered head injuries and died on the way to a hospital.

The final day of the Six Days of Ghent event -- which takes place in the Kuipke velodrome in Ghent's Citadelpark -- was canceled.

Galvez had won gold with Spain's Joan Llaneras at this year's world championship Bordeaux-Paris professional cycling race, having also won the title seven years earlier. In addition, he won the Madison track cycling world title in New York in 1999 and again this year.

Galvez also competed in road races, winning 12 events and placing second in the fourth stage of this year's Tour de France for the Illes Balears team.
