Yachtsman forgoes race, rescues opponent

FREMANTLE, Australia, Nov. 24 (UPI) -- British yachtsman Mike Golding gave up his position in the 30,000-mile Veluz 5 Oceans race to rescue a fellow competitor whose boat was sinking.

The 46-year-old former firefighter was in second place in the around-the-world nautical race when he decided to turn around and rescue Alex Thomson, who was in third place, but could no longer compete, Sky News reported.

Thomson's yacht, the Hugo Boss, had temporarily capsized. Thomson righted it but the damage was enough to strand him.

After the duo travels to the Western Australian city of Fremantle to drop off Thomson, Golding will be able to resume the race and petition for a time allowance, given the situation.

Sky News said the Hugo Boss was left to sink.
