A's Crosby miffed at 3rd misdiagnosis

OAKLAND, Calif., Nov. 22 (UPI) -- Oakland Athletics team doctors have, for the third time, failed to diagnose one of shortstop Bobby Crosby's broken bones -- this time a spinal fracture.

The back injury kept Crosby out of the lineup during the last two months of the regular season and the playoffs. But it was not discovered to be a stress fracture until Dr. Robert Watkins of the Los Angeles Spine Surgery Institute did a bone scan a few weeks ago, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Last year, Crosby played for a week with fractures in his ribs and later broke an ankle, which was initially diagnosed as a sprain.

"That's three things that should have been caught," Crosby said. "I'd just like a diagnosis one time and know what it is. If I get hurt, I want to know what's wrong. I don't think it's that much to ask."

Crosby expects to be back on the field next season after working with a physical therapist. But he said he is concerned because he was told he could play and now realizes that doing that could have ended his career.
