CHICAGO, Nov. 20 (UPI) -- The Chicago Cubs and power-hitting free-agent Alfonso Soriano struck a deal for an 8-year, $136 million contract.

Soriano, who is considered the top free agent on the market this season, agreed in principle to the deal Sunday, the Chicago Tribune reported. The deal, set to be finalized pending a physical examination of Soriano, would make the outfielder the second-highest paid player in Cubs history, behind Sammy Sosa.

The move by Cubs General Manager Jim Hendry follows the $73 million resigning of third baseman Aramis Ramirez for five years, a 3-year deal worth $13 million for second baseman Mark DeRosa, and the resigning of pitchers Kerry Wood -- for $1.75 million plus incentives -- and Wade Miller -- for $1.5 million plus incentives, the Chicago Sun-Times said.
