OAKLAND, Calif., Nov. 17 (UPI) -- Oakland Athletics bench coach Bob Geren has been chosen to be the next manager of the American League team.
The team has called a news conference for Friday to announce the promotion of Geren, who was the Athletics' bench coach last season after three years as bullpen coach, the Oakland Tribune and San Francisco Chronicle both reported.
Geren, 45, replaces Ken Macha, who was fired last month two days after the Athletics were eliminated from the American League Championship Series. Even then Geren was considered the front-runner as the team's next manager.
While he has no major-league managerial experience, Geren has built a 452-390 record managing minor-league teams in the Oakland and Boston organizations, the Tribune said
