NEW YORK, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- Johann Santana, who won 19 games for the Minnesota Twins last season, was unanimously voted the 2006 American League Cy Young award.
The award, voted on by members of the Baseball Writers Association of America, is given each season to the top pitcher in each league.
Santana, a 27-year-old lefthander, was listed first on each of the 28 ballots to outdistance the New York Yankees Chien-Ming Wang, who was second, and Toronto's Roy Halladay, who was third.
It was the second time that Santana was a unanimous choice for the Cy Young Award. He also won in 2004.
In 2006, Santana was the first pitcher since the New York Mets Dwight Gooden in 1985 to lead the major league in wins (19), earned run average (2.77) and strikeouts (245).
