CHICAGO, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- Veteran slugger Aramis Ramirez Sunday signed a new five-year contract to remain with the Chicago Cubs, the team said.
Through his agent, Ramirez had maintained the entire off-season that he wanted to stay with the Cubs, but had set a signing deadline for Saturday.
When that did not happen, technically he became a free agent.
The Cubs, on their Web site, said the deal will keep Ramirez with them through the 2011 season.
No financial figures were disclosed. He had been seeking a seven-year, $119 million package, similar to the one that New York Mets center-fielder Carlos Beltran signed two years ago.
Ramirez signed a four-year, $42 million contract with the Cubs at the start of the 2005 season.
In his career, the third baseman has a .279 batting average with 196 home runs and 669 RBI.
Last season, Ramirez hit .291 with 38 homers and 119 RBI.
