NHL: N.Y. Islanders 3, Philadelphia 1

PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 9 (UPI) -- Alexei Yashin scored goals in each of the first two periods Thursday night to help the New York Islanders beat Philadelphia, 3-1.

Jason Blake assisted on both Yashin goals. Richard Park also scored a goal in the second period, and goaltender Rick DiPietro gave up one goal on 33 shots for the Islanders -- who moved into first place in the Atlantic Division ahead of the New York Rangers.

Yashin increased his team-high point total to 17.

Simon Gagne scored on the power play in the third period, and Antero Niittymaki gave up three goals on 20 shots for the Flyers, who have lost their last four games.

Philadelphia is just 2-6 under new coach John Stevens.

The Flyers have recalled veteran center Petr Nedved. He replaces Jeff Carter, who is expected to six weeks with a fractured ankle bone.
