Penn State's Paterno has knee surgery

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa., Nov. 6 (UPI) -- Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, injured in a sideline incident last Saturday, had surgery on his left leg and knee.

Paterno, 79, had a fracture near the top of his left shin bone and also tore the medial collateral ligament and posterior cruciate ligament in his knee, Dr. Wayne Sebastianelli, Penn State director of Athletic Medicine, said in a release.

Sebastianelli operated on the coach Sunday and said Paterno was resting comfortably Monday and a full recovery was expected. The coach will have his leg in a brace and it will be six weeks before his left leg will be weight-bearing, Sebastianelli said.

Paterno was reportedly talking with football coaching staff members by telephone Monday, discussing game plans for Saturday's game against Temple. He was expected to be at practice Tuesday and at Saturday's game.

Penn State tight end Andrew Quarless fell into Paterno during the third quarter of Saturday's game at the end of the play in front of the Penn State bench.
