Nephew charged with killing boxing champ

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- Police in Jamaica have charged a nephew of Trevor Berbick with killing the former heavyweight boxing champion.

Harold Berbick and an alleged accomplice, Kenton Gordon, were arrested Thursday night, Radio Jamaica reported.

Berbick, a boxer who fought Muhammad Ali, Larry Holmes and Mike Tyson during his career, was found dead Saturday in front of a church near his home in Portland. The town is 80 miles east of Kingston.

Investigators were reportedly looking into allegations that Berbick had a long-running feud with his family.

Berbick was an uneven fighter who could take on the greats of his era without disgracing himself and then lose to a lesser boxer, Fox Sports said. His behavior was also eccentric outside the ring and included a conviction for having sex with his family's underage baby sitter.

As Ali's last opponent, Berbick refused to talk to reporters at a news conference until Ali got there. Once Ali was available, of course, no one wanted to talk to Berbick.
