Azinger to be next U.S. Ryder captain

ATLANTA, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- PGA veteran Paul Azinger will be named captain of the 2008 United States Ryder Cup team.

Azinger, a golf analyst for ABC Sports who won the 1993 PGA Championship, will replace Tom Lehman.

A source said an official announcement is expected next Monday, the day after the PGA's season-ending Tour Championship in Atlanta.

The United States suffered a big 18 1/2 to 9 1/2 loss in this year's competition in September.

Azinger, who has been a playing member on Ryder Cup teams, declined to serve as captain in 2004.

His Ryder Cup record is 5-7-3 and his Ryder teams compiled a 2-2 mark, winning in 1991 and '93, and losing in 1989 and 2002.

The United States has lost the last three competitions.

Azinger's European counterpart will be fellow ABC analyst Nick Faldo, who was named in March 2005.

Faldo has won both the Masters and the British Open twice.
