HEMPSTEAD, N.Y., Nov. 1 (UPI) -- Veteran running back Curtis Martin of the New York Jets Wednesday was placed on the Reserved/Physically Unable to Perform list because of a gimpy right knee.

Martin underwent arthroscopic surgery last December and was unable to play this season. There has been speculation about his playing future.

"With the information I know about my future, it doesn't look too bright as far as me having a further career," he said at a press conference. "This is something that is beyond my control; this is something that is beyond my threshold for pain."

The designation means he will go on the injured reserve list.

Martin, 33, has broken nearly every team rushing record since joining the Jets in 1998, including yards (10,302), touchdowns (58) and 100-yard games (43).

He rushed for 14,101 yards and 90 touchdowns in 168 games, caught 10 touchdown passes and is fourth on the NFL's all-time rushing list.

He was a third-round draft pick by New England in 1995.
