OXFORD, Miss., Oct. 28 (UPI) -- Brandon Cox passed for 256 yards and a touchdown Saturday as seventh-ranked Auburn stayed alive in the SEC West race with a 23-17 win over Mississippi.

Kenny Irons rushed for 106 yards on 23 carries and Brad Lester rushed for 49 yards and a touchdown as the Tigers ran for 175 yards, doubling the Ole Miss total.

Auburn (8-1, 5-1 SEC) remained a game in the loss column behind division-leading Arkansas, which beat the Tigers earlier this season.

Courtney Taylor caught eight passes 108 yards.

Ole Miss quarterback Brent Schaeffer, a transfer from Tennessee, completed only 8-of-16 passes for 161 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions that led to 10 Tigers points.
