Ancic leads winners at St. Petersburg

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia, Oct. 26 (UPI) -- Mario Ancic Thursday advanced to the quarterfinals of the St. Petersburg Open tennis tournament in St. Petersburg, Russia.

In a second-round match, the third-seeded Croat beat Raemon Sluiter of the Netherlands, 6-3, 6-4.

Fourth-seeded Tommy Haas of Germany was a 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-2, loser to Russian wild card Igor Kunitsyn. Unseeded Max Mirnyi of Belarus topped unseeded Andrei Pavel of Romania, 6-3, 7-5. And Jan Hernych of the Czech Republic beat qualifier Wayne Arthurs of Australia, 6-4, 6-4.

Heading into Friday's quarterfinals, Ancic is the only seed still competing. He will next face Mirnyi.

The other quarterfinal matches will feature defending champion Thomas Johansson of Sweden against Wesley Moodie of South Africa, Kunitsyn against Potito Starace of Italy, and Hernych against wild card Ernest Gulbis of Latvia.

The 2006 St. Petersburg champion will claim $142,000.
