Aggies suspend star player

LAS CRUCES, N.M., Oct. 26 (UPI) -- New Mexico State University has suspended forward Tyrone Nelson indefinitely from the men's basketball team.

Coach Reggie Theus said the suspension is not related to recent allegations that Nelson was involved in the alleged robbery of a pizza delivery man in August.

The Las Cruces Sun-News reported that the 6-foot-9-inch Nelson, a junior from Hempstead, Texas, missed a team practice last Saturday morning without approval.

"This is a working punishment," Theus told the newspaper. "I don't even want to see him right now. Tyrone has to understand that everyone has to be accountable for their actions and how they affect things."

Last season, Nelson earned first-team All-Western Athletic Conference honors after leading the Aggies with 17.8 points and 8.7 rebounds per game.

New Mexico State opens its season Friday, Dec. 1, against Chicago State.
