Top seeds lose in opening round at Lyon

LYON, France, Oct. 24 (UPI) -- Top seeds Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus and Gaston Gaudio of Argentina were first-round upset victims Tuesday at the Grand Prix de Tennis de Lyon.

Fourth-seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet avoided an upset by beating two-time Grand Slam champion Marat Safin.

Veteran Frenchman Arnaud Clement defeated the top-seeded Baghdatis 6-2, 5-7, 6-3, while German Simon Greul beat the second-seeded Gaudio 6-0, 6-2.

Baghdatis was this year's Australian Open runner-up to Roger Federer, while Gaudio is a former French Open champ.

Clement was the Lyon champion in 2000 and was the runner-up here in 2003.

Third-seeded Slovak Dominik Hrbaty avoided an upset by overcoming France's Florent Serra 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, while Gasquet advanced by beating Safin 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
